Brussels, 21/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - After the Mecca agreement to form a unity government of Fatah and Hamas, “the new Palestinian Government must reject every form of violence and must recognise and implement international agreements”, said Hans-Gert Pöttering on Tuesday after his meeting with the 21 Arab ambassadors in Brussels. “It is only on this basis that progress can be made”, the European Parliament president added in a press release. He hoped that the Quartet meeting, which was to begin late afternoon on Wednesday, would allow the peace process in the region to be rekindled. Saying that intercultural dialogue was an essential element for improving and intensifying mutual cooperation and understanding between different cultures, Pöttering expressed the hope that this question would be “the main point on the agenda of the next Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Tunis, in March”.
