Polish Liberal MEPs complain about Maciej Giertych's “harmful” booklet

Brussels, 20/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - As the European Parliament confirmed on Monday 19 February that it had not contributed to the publication of the booklet by non-attached Polish MEP Maciej Giertych, his fellow Poles in the ALDE group strongly opposed the theses set out in the booklet “Civilisations at war in Europe”. “We strongly oppose the publication of Prof. Maciej Giertych's booklet … which is based on the aberrant theory of civilisations of Polish historiographer Feliks Koneczny back in the 1930s,” say Bronislaw Geremek, Jan Kulakowski, Janusz Onyszkiewicz, Pawel Piskorski and Grazyna Staniszewska. “We believe it is unacceptable to use the authority of such institutions as the European Parliament to promote notions that are contradictory to the spirit of equality, mutual respect and dialog. In a uniting Europe there can be no place for anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia”. The went on that they considered the text “harmful to the image of Poland, whose constitution is a warrant of the inherent and inalienable dignity of the person, and forbids the existence of political parties whose programmes or activities sanction racial or national hatred”.
