20/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Peter Hustinx indicated that the increased use of personal data due to the future change in status of Europol was expected to be accompanied by an improvement in data protection. Following publication of his report on 16 February, Hustinx declared: “Europol will be more in line with other EU bodies…We have to make sure that exchange with other EU bodies, such as OLAF, will be based on a consistent underlying framework for data protection in police cooperation”. At the end of December, the Commission formulated a draft Council decision for transforming Europol into a Community agency with a broader mandate (EUROPE 9332). (bc)
