EU celebrates second anniversary of Kyoto Protocol

Brussels, 15/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 16 February, it will be the second anniversary of the coming into effect of the Kyoto Protocol. Stavros Dimas, Environment Commissioner, will seize this opportunity to invite the international community to rapidly begin talks with a view to an overall treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol in 2012. In a press release, the commissioner states it is essential for the United States and all other main greenhouse gas emitters to be involved in the work. Mr Dimas is on visit to Washington to discuss with senior US government officials and Congress members future measures to be adopted at global level on climate and other environmental issues. The Commission will celebrate the anniversary of Kyoto by hosting a gathering of meteorologists and TV weather forecasters from EU member states, in Brussels on 16 February. (an)
