08/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 15 February, the Council is expected to formally approve the appointment of Dutchman Roeland van de Geer as Special Representative to the African Great Lakes Region, taking over from Italian Aldo Ajello. Mr Ajello held the post for 11 years and is leaving after the transition period, which has just ended with the formation of the first democratically elected government in the DRC. One of the new representative's first tasks will be to monitor the resumption of the peace process between Uganda and the LRA, to avoid any destabilisation of the east of the DRC and the south of Sudan. Before taking up the post of Dutch Ambassador to Kabul in Afghanistan, Mr van de Geer held a similar post in Mozambique. He has also headed the Africa desk of the Dutch foreign ministry. (oj)
