GUE/NGL delegation visits Volkswagen/Forest

Brussels, 29/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left of the European Parliament, led by its President, Francis Wurtz, on Tuesday paid a visit to the Volkswagen/Forest factory in Brussels, where around 4000 workers are to lose their jobs after a partial transfer of activity to Germany, an issue which the GUE/NGL group has succeeded in having added to the agenda of the plenary session of the EP of 29 November (see EUROPE 9315). The MEPs talked to the workers and union representatives, including those of the sub contracting companies, according to a press release, which goes on to state that Francis Wurtz took the opportunity to stress the need to keep as many jobs as possible and to create substitute positions, and highlighted Volkswagen's responsibility to pay compensation to the workers who have been made redundant, irrespective of the possibility of using European structural funds allocated to Belgium. Furthermore, those taking part in the meeting expressed indignation at the "attempt on the part of certain politicians to put German and Belgian workers in conflict with each other", the press release adds.
