Thumbs up to accession although more effort is needed

Brussels, 23/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the EP's foreign affairs committee adopted by unanimity but with one abstention, the report by Pierre Moscovici (PES, France), who welcomed the progress carried out by Romania and approved its accession to the EU on 1 January 2007. Welcoming the efforts accomplished, the report, nevertheless, points out to the Romania authorities that they still have to “pursue reforms after accession”. The question of minorities will particularly continue to be the subject of a follow up after1 January, indicate MEPs, who are pressing Bucharest to consolidate reform for protecting the rights of Rom and the Hungarian minority. More efforts are also needed in reform of the judiciary and the fight against corruption, the absorption and management of EU aid in CAP and structural funds, as well as in the application of the Community acquis in some food safety areas. MEPs are therefore encouraging Romania to take measures to avoid having to use safeguard measures, which should only apply to specific domains for a limited period. (ab)
