THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/qatar

20/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEP Lilli Grüber, who met the Emir of Qatar during the latter's visit to Strasbourg on 15 November (see EUROPE 9308), expresses the hope, in a press release, that Qatar, which is currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, will continue its commitments regarding Middle East crises. Ms Grüber, who chairs the EP delegation for relations with the Gulf countries, plans to go to Qatar next year to meet the wife of the Emir, Sheila Mozah, considered by some as a symbol of the new role of women in “advanced Arab society”, a press release states. As a journalist, Lilli Grüber notes that the Emir's visit to Strasbourg coincided with the launching of the English version of Al Jazeera TV (which has its seat in Doha), saying she hoped this would help to contribute to a real knowledge of Islamism in Europe and the USA.
