Brussels, 20/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Reacting to the expulsion of two European diplomats (one from Italy and one from Sweden), members of the European Commission delegation in Addis Ababa (the capital of Ethiopia), EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel said their expulsion was 'totally unacceptable.'
Speaking to reporters, Michel said he had not been informed about the reasons for their expulsion, but it was unacceptable under international diplomatic rules. Press agency AP suggests the diplomats were arrested for trying to help two Ethiopians sought for serious crimes to cross the border into Kenya but the Commissioner regretted not having being kept informed by the Ethiopian authorities. He has summoned Ethiopia's envoy in Brussels for an explanation on Friday and has been trying to contact the Prime minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, by phone. (an)
