Brussels, 20/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - With just over a week to go to the second round of the presidential elections on 29 October in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the European force in Kinshasa will be getting reinforcements of 220 soldiers from Libreville in Gabon. The 200 German and Dutch soldiers belong to a stand-by force in Gabon and will bring troop numbers in Kinshasa up to nearly 1400, including an intervention force made up of Spanish legionaries and a Polish military police unit which had already intervened on 21 August to halt the attack on the residency of election candidate Bemba. As well as armoured transport vehicles belonging to the Spanish and Polish troops, EUFOR has four French APCs and three helicopter and can, if necessary, call for more resources deployed in Gabon. Following the crash of a second Belgian drone, EUFOR had to interrupt drones flying over the Congolese capital. The investigation concluded that the loss of these planes was due to bad weather conditions. Flights have gradually begun again since 16 October. (oj)
