09/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has not received a copy of the agreement which the Belgian government appears to have reached with the company Suez on the Belgian electricity market, the spokesperson to Neelie Kroes has told the press. The competition services will look at this "very closely" to ensure that the agreement does not impinge upon the Commission's exclusive competence for matters pertaining to mergers, he added (EUROPE 9279). We have no problem if the agreement refers to horizontal measures addressing problems of competition which have nothing to do with the merger between Gaz de France and Suez, the spokesperson pointed out, adding however that only the arrangements proposed by both companies to answer the concerns of the Commission would be taken into account by the investigation.
