Brussels, 09/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European week of the Community ecological label opened on 9 October in eight Member States of the EU (Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Malta, Latvia, Portugal and Spain). Seminars, competitions and school activities will be carried out in these countries in order to promote awareness among European consumers of this label, which certifies that the environmental performance of products and services bearing it fulfills strict ecological criteria laid down by European legislation. The system of the Community eco-label, which is applied on a voluntary basis, was set up in 1992 to promote products with a reduced environmental impact, within the EU. Its forthcoming revision, with a view to increasing the visibility of the label on the market, will be preceded by a public consultation, which has been announced for late autumn 2006. (an)
