27/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Hartmut Nassauer (CDU) and Markus Ferber (CSU) announced in a press release that CDU-CSU MEPs voted unanimously on Tuesday in Strasbourg, for the president of the EPP-ED, Hans-Gert Pöttering (CDU) to be their candidate to succeed Josep Borrell as the new president of the European Parliament. The EPP/ED group will chose its candidate on 14 November and the election of the new president, who will exercise his functions until the end of this legislature with the European elections in June 2009, is planned for 16 January 2007. Hans-Gert Pöttering has been an MEP since June 1979, the date of his first direct election.
