Vittorio Agnoletto supports Kurdish Democratic Society Party's call for ceasefire

Strasbourg, 27/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The only way to find a solution to the conflict between Turks and Kurds is a “political and diplomatic solution and not a military solution”, MEP Vittorio Agnoletto (GUE/NGL, Italy) told the press on 26 September. The MEP called for “two things”: - for “human rights” to be placed at the centre of membership negotiations with Turkey; - and for “concrete action” to be taken by Europe, which “cannot simply stand by looking on” to see how the situation develops. The Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) launched a call for a ceasefire as tension on the ground grew worse. “We are seeing a return to ethnic nationalism in Turkey. Tension is climbing between the Turkish nation and the Kurdish nation and we are reaching a dangerous point. This rise in the tension is not in anyone's interest. We are making a call for a ceasefire”, Ahmet Turk, Co-President of the DTP, told the press. “The Kurds are willing to find a solution within Turkey”, and “they will see their rights respected if Turkey turns westward”, he said. Aysel Turk, Co-President of the DTP, was of the view that “the Kurdish question is very important for democratisation of Turkey”. “We are calling on the European institutions to mobilise their efforts in favour of the ceasefire”, which is a “historic moment for us”, she said.
