EU imposes restrictions on import of Brazilian fisheries products

Brussels, 25/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Member States' experts in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health have endorsed a European Commission proposal to impose tests and certification of all Brazilian fisheries products for the European market. On arrival in Member States, all non-certified consignments will be tested, with the costs being borne by the importer. At the same time, five fishery establishments in Brazil will be removed from the list of establishments authorised to export to the EU, because of their failure to comply with EU hygiene rules. Histamine at higher than acceptable European levels has been found in Brazilian fisheries products. Histamine is a vasodilator and can cause sensitisation, allergies and anaphylaxis.
