Commission accepts school milk scheme has to be changed

Brussels, 19/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council on 18 September, the European Commission acknowledged that the initial aims of the aid scheme for the distribution of milk to school children had changed since its creation, particularly since nutritionists' recommendations had begun to carry more weight. Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said that her staff were examining suggestions form several Member States, while pointing out that: - some low calorie products, like skimmed milk, were already on the list of products eligible for Community aid; - protein content was also taken into account, with a national top-up allowed for products with a low fat content. Such was the Commission response to the request from Denmark, supported by the United Kingdom, German, Finnish, Swedish, Dutch, Luxemburg, Estonian, Latvian, Maltese and Cypriot delegations, to amend Community legislation on the school milk scheme, in order to increase EU aid for products that had a low fat content. Denmark suggested that subsidy levels should reflect recommendations from nutritionists, excluding products with a high fat and/or sugar content from aid scheme, and including a greater number of low-fat products, such as buttermilk. Denmark said that it would be in their interests for Member States to able to decide themselves which categories of product they intended to subsidise, because this would allow the exclusion of products which, for nutritional reasons, were not recommended for children, with chocolate milk top of the list.
