Brussels, 05/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Libya may contribute men and material for joint EU coastal patrols (Operation Jason) that are soon to be launched to survey the waters off the coast of Malta and Italy, a Commission spokesperson said on Tuesday. Commissioner Franco Frattini had announced on 1 September that Libya was open to such a hypothesis, in exchange for European assistance in controlling its land borders. A tripartite meeting (Malta, Libya and Italy) to give concrete substance to Libya's good intentions may be held at La Valette within ten days, but the 6 September meeting has been cancelled (EUROPE 9252).
