26/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to indications from Eurostat on 25 July the EU25 current account deficit stood at 36.7 bn euro in the first quarter of 2006, compared to a deficit of 17.1 bn in the first quarter of 2005 and a deficit of 29.1 bn in the fourth quarter of 2005. The surplus recorded in the services account stood at (+11.5 bn euro) is mainly the result of a surplus in financial services (+6.2 bn), other business services (+5.9 bn), transportation (+3.4 bn) and computer and information services (+2.4bn). The Eurostat press release explains that from the first quarter of 2006, the EU25 external current account recorded a surplus with the USA (+32.0 bn euro), Canada (+2.9 bn), Hong Kong (+2.5 bn) and Switzerland (+1.5 bn) and a deficit with China (-26.1 bn), Russia (-15.6 bn) and Japan (-6.1 bn).
