24/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release Sarah Ludford MEP gave her support to an initiative by the Spanish Ciudadanos Europeos organisation to set up a European “Info Point” to provide Europeans who want to buy property in another EU Member State with information in their language on this subject. The British Liberal and other MEPs have written to the European Commissioner for Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou requesting him to reflect on how to help people avoid being cheated. Baroness Ludford notes that “The numbers of British people buying second homes abroad continues to grow”. According to British statistics the number of Britons owning a foreign property stood at 178,000 in 2003-04 but had grown to 244,000 between 2004-05. The EP Petitions Committee adopted a report in December 2005 that was very critical of the law on property in the Valencia region of Spain and got the regional government to agree to revising this legislation.
