Commission condemns Mumbai attacks

Brussels, 12/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a message to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso has said he was “profoundly shocked” by the terrible series of bomb blasts in Mumbai on Tuesday. “My heartfelt thoughts go out to the many families who have been bereaved by this despicable and cowardly act, which I condemn in the strongest possible terms,” wrote Mr Barroso. He added that, within the international community, “we must continue to do all we can to combat the scourge of terror, in all its manifestations”. Following the eight bomb blasts which struck the suburban rail network of Mumbai, on the west coast of India, at rush hour on Tuesday evening, the provisional death toll is at least 190, with more than 600 people injured. The bombs exploded on trains and in stations of the Western Railway suburban network.
