Brussels, 12/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of MEP Mario Mauro (Forza Italia), at the European Parliament in Brussels on 10 July, the Italian organisation AVSI set out the humanitarian challenges currently being faced in the north of Uganda. Alberto Piatti the secretary general of AVSI, launched an appeal to MEPs “against the indifference of the institutions in the face of the delicate humanitarian situation” in the region, particularly in the face of “the drama being lived by thousands of children to whom our workers in the field are trying to give hope for the future”. Mr Piatti welcomed in particular the reaction by Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL, Italy), chairwoman of the EP's development committee, and Mr Mauro highlighted the key role played by NGOs working on the ground “with a clear vision of the people and their needs”.
