12/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Questioned by press during his visit to Brussels (see related articles), Italian foreign minister Massimo D'Alema said that the development of a European energy strategy was one of the elements in the “Europe of results”. The strategy should focus on diversification of supply sources, increasing the networks with supplier countries and also a joint commitment on research and investment in the most innovative sectors, he said. There should be, he said, a certain “specialisation” by EU Member States, because “we should not all make the same choices”. Mr D'Alema stressed the innovative nature of the energy agreement Italy has just completed with Russia, since Italy has committed itself not only as a “purchaser country” and Russia has not committed itself as “only a seller of raw materials”. This agreement could be a model for energy relations with other producer countries, he said.
