Presentation of local projects for sustainable energy use as part of CONCERTO initiative

Brussels, 12/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - CONCERTO, the initiative for sustainable energy in Europe, brought together over one hundred representatives of the 28 local community projects involved to discuss more sustainable energy use at local level in Brussels from 3 to 5 July, says a press release. CONCERTO, which is co-funded by the European Commission, supports these 28 local communities in 9 projects across twelve European countries in demonstrating actions that are both sustainable and highly energy efficient. Brigitte Bach, project coordinator of CONCERTO Plus (which provides a framework for dissemination of information on the projects) welcomed the progress made on a road map for the next five years (see http: //http://www.concertoplus.eu/ ). Among those taking part, Sarah Nilsson explained that one of the Swedish communities involved, Växjö, decided to stop using fossil fuels for its energy needs, and Reinhard Martinsen, coordinator of the act2 project in Hanover in Germany, said its aim was to reduce energy consumption for heating by up to 50% over the next twenty years. The ECOSTILER project, which includes the communities of Amsterdam New West, London Southwark and Mäbjerg in Denmark, aims to produce energy from the biomass. Its coordinator Rudy Roth illustrated the impact in terms of the reduction in demand for fossil fuels. Marc Jedliczka, coordinator of the Renaissance project in Lyon (part of a project together with the community of Zaragoza in Spain), stressed how CONCERTO had changed attitudes on energy consumption.
