Brussels, 03/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The bureau of the EP delegation for Moldova composed of Marianne Mikko (Estonian Socialist), Zdzislaw Podkanski (UEN, Poland) and Rihards Piks (EPP-ED, Latvia) made a visit to Moldova from 27 to 30 June. In a press release diffused after the visit, the delegation notes with satisfaction that the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) is “very effective and successful” and “brings the Republic of Moldova a favourable situation for the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict”. Since the last visit of the delegation in October 2005, Moldova has made significant progress by adopting important legislation, e.g. the audiovisual code, and in harmonising that legislation with the acquis communautaire and international standards. However, the delegation also stated a significant deficit in some areas of implementation of the legislation. The message of the European Parliament Delegation to Moldovan authorities was: “Implementation!” The members also noted insufficient progress in fighting especially high-level corruption, respect for human rights, freedom of media and fair and transparent implementation of legislation in justice procedures. The delegation invites the European Commission to intensify its aid to Moldova on the road to European integration.
