03/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 30 June, as Finland assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU, a delegation of European Church representatives, led by the Archbishop of Turku, met Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja and officials from the ministries of education and labour. Other members of the delegation included the Director of the Commission for Church and Society of the Conference of European Churches Rüdiger Knoll, Bishop William Kennedy and Mgr Noel Treanor, respectively member and Secretary General of the COMECE, the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community. A press release said that the main issues addressed were enlargement of the EU, the European social dimension, inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue, the development of a people-centred European migration policy (accompanied, said Mr Tuomioja, by efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals), and ethical issues arising from the 7th Research Framework Programme.
