20/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The first session of the new UN Human Rights Council opened in Geneva on 19 June. The Council's 47 members are meeting until 30 June to decide on operational procedures to assess respect for human rights in the 191 UN member countries. The new body could begin its work by approving two documents submitted by the UN General Assembly: a convention against enforced disappearances and another guaranteeing the rights of indigenous peoples.
