Brussels, 20/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The regulatory framework for electronic communications presents an ideal opportunity to adapt the rules to market realities, characterised by growing convergence of platforms and services and the arrival of new players, and to create an environment conducive to competition and investment. Such was the message given by European Telecoms operators (ETNO) to the Commission at a recent meeting with Commissioners Viviane Reding (information society and the media) and Neelie Kroes (competition). ETNO called on the Commission to deregulate and to remove the ex-ante legislation, or see Europe fall behind the rest of the world. It called, for example, for a reduction in the number of relevant markets (currently 18) and to introduce rules only where they can still be justified. The Commission is due to submit its first proposals on the review of the framework at the end of June, before putting forward its final proposal at the end of the year.
