European Council calls on Iran to give an early positive response” to Six' cooperation initiative

Brussels, 16/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - During the European Council, the EU Heads of State and Government stated the importance of the agreement reached on 1 June in Vienna whereby the “Six” - the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (USA, France, UK, Russia and China) plus Germany - finalised their offer of cooperation with Iran aimed at making Tehran give up its uranium enrichment activities. The agreement opens up the possibility of reaching a negotiated agreement with Iran founded on cooperation, the European Council stresses in its conclusions, giving its total support to the “balanced approach” by the Six. The Summit welcomes the constructive meetings of 6 June in Tehran between High Representative Javier Solana and the Iranian leaders and “encourages Iran to take the positive path that is offered” by the Six. Furthermore, meeting Chinese President Hu Jintao in Shanghai, the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, described the offer of the Six as a ”step forward” while stating that Iran was not seeking to develop nuclear weapons. “We consider the offer as a step forward”, the Iranian president told the press, giving his assurance that Tehran would give an answer in due course, taking into account Iran's international interests.
