24/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - A year after France and the Netherlands' rejection of the Constitutional Treaty on 22 May 2005, Margot Wallström, Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Information Strategy made the following declaration, “It is sometimes said that the French rejection of the Constitution was 'not because of the text, but because of the context'. The EU can play an important role in modifying this 'political context' by placing citizens' concerns at the top of the European agenda. Citizens want the EU to be able to channel globalisation and contribute to more security and solidarity. They feel concerned by social problems. They want their voices to be heard. One year later, I think that we will be able to demonstrate that we have really been listening. The two “no” votes in the referendums have strengthened our determination to continue the programme for a more secure, fairer and more democratic European Union. Europe is not just a market, it has a social soul as well. The future solution to institutional problems can only be reached in a way that it both democratic and transparent”.
