Brussels, 24/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In an interview to La Repubblica on 24 May, the European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, Franco Frattini, was asked about the new Italian government and noted that the Minister for the Interior, Giuliano Amato “certainly had a vision of institutional developments in Europe, which could be very helpful in the battle to get rid of the veto on justice and security questions”. The former Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs affirmed that this battle was one in which “I hope Italy takes the leadership”, adding, “I am confident that I will have this help from the new government, whereas it is clear that Minister Castelli, on this point, would have had some difficulties”. According to Frattini, the European Council “will give the green light to putting justice into the Community's remit, which should also relaunch the draft constitution, even if this is not the same text as that rejected in the French and Dutch referendums”. Mr Frattini said that he agreed with Angela Merkel that, “the Constitutional Treaty should be modified in third part of it, which is unnecessarily heavy. A relaunch of enthusiasm is needed and I want Italy to be able to make up for current French weakness”.
