THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/constitution

24/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Valéry Giscard d'Estaing is wrong when he suggests that the French should vote on the constitutional treaty again, after having rejected it in 2005, a press release from MEP Timothy Kirkhope states (see EUROPE 9198). “Europe needs no constitution. A simplifying treaty is enough to modernise the institutions and the workings of the Union”, the British Conservative says, telling the Chairman of the Convention that drafted the text: “We don't need any more time to reflect on a Constitution that died in the polling booths in France and the Netherlands last year. It is time to give the Constitution a decent burial and move on to a real reform programme in Europe that tackles the serious economic problems”.
