Brussels, 11/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of Europe Day on 9 May (see related article), the Union of European Federalists (UEF) chaired by Mercedes Bresso (President of the Piedmont Region in Italy) and the Young European Federalists (JEF) chaired by Jan Seifert called on the EU to make a firm commitment in favour of the European Constitution and to organise a European referendum on this in 2009, when the next European elections are to be held. The youth members of the EPP, PES, Liberals and Greens joined the Federalists in calling for a uniform European electoral law and the election of a number of MEPs on transnational lists. UEF calls for the Constitution to come into effect automatically as soon as it is ratified by four fifths of the Member States, “representing a majority of European citizens”.
