Brussels, 04/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 3 May, the EP Fisheries Committee approved, with a few adjustments, the proposal presented in November 2005 on updating rules for the transmission by Member States of data relating to the quantity and the value of fishing products off-loaded. This legislation facilitates analysis of the fisheries products market and more general analyses on the fisheries situation. Philippe Morillon's report on this issue will be adopted by the European Parliament during its June plenary, in Strasbourg. Most amendments adopted by the Fisheries Committee aim to provide greater clarity and consistency. The European Commission's proposal (which amends the legislation in force dating back to 1991) provides for data to be forwarded once a year (instead of every month), the need to make a distinction depending on the flag under which vessels operate for offloading catches, and establish greater flexibility concerning the use of sampling techniques for estimating total offloading.
