Brussels, 04/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs is organising a conference on “Energy Efficiency in Fisheries” in Brussels (at the Albert Borschette Conference Centre) on 11 and 12 May. The meeting comes at a time when the sector is seeking to face economic difficulties due to the surge in oil prices (over 100% between 2004 and 2006). In its communication adopted on 9 March this year on “Improving the Economic Situation of the Fishing Industry”, the Commission above all suggests that Community funds be earmarked for research into new technologies and the changeover to less fuel-intensive engines and fishing gear (EUROPE 9148). The conference will bring together ship-owners and fishing gear technologists from several EU countries, invited to discuss ways to improve the energy efficiency of fishing vessels. Joe Borg, European Fisheries Commissioner, will deliver the opening speech at the conference on 11 May. The first day will be devoted to fishing techniques and new generation engines (hybrid motors). Discussion on the second day will cover the question of subsidies (both national and Community), allowing sustainable fishing and the use of biofuels to be promoted.
