EU expresses concern and calls parties to negotiating table

Brussels, 18/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on 14 April, the European Commission expresses concern about the fact that the situation in Sri Lanka is growing worse after the recent acts of violence which killed nine military and the assassination of a prominent Tamil civil society representative. The EU, Japan, the United States and Norway urge the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to continue their negotiation and to take part in the upcoming discussions on application of the ceasefire agreements, to be held in Geneva from 19 to 21 April. As further attacks took place on Monday, the Tamil Tigers are threatening to boycott talks. The joint presidents of the conference of donors are to meet in Tokyo on 24 April to take stock of the peace process so far.
