Brussels, 12/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) must remain focused on the EU reform agenda in parallel with the electoral preparations. Such was the message delivered by EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, to the Macedonian Foreign Minister, Ilinka Mitreva, in Brussels on 11 April. “As a candidate country, more was expected than before and no time should be lost to deliver on the identified priority areas of reform”, Mr Solana said during his meeting with Mr Mitreva. The EU's High Representative welcomed the recent adoption of electoral reform, as well as the Macedonian government's intention to pursue judiciary reform. He regretted, nonetheless, the “government's intention not to proceed to the parliamentary adoption of the Police Law prior to the parliamentary elections”. Mr Solana also restated the importance of preparing the forthcoming parliamentary elections in a “climate of party political consensus”, and encouraged the country to “continue its positive and constructive role in the region”.
