Brussels, 11/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - Meeting on 7 April in Paris under the chairmanship of Ernest-Antoine Seillière, the presidents of the national business federations of UNICE (recently named the Confederation of European Business) adopted a declaration in which they call for a boost to be given to Europe. The Presidents gave President Seillière a mandate “to amplify UNICE's action and communication for a stronger and more active European Union capable of improving growth, motivating new generations and giving them hope for a better future”. In their declaration they underline the essential aims of business: 1) Member States must implement Lisbon Strategy reforms to enhance research and innovation by developing a broad programme, “better legislation”, and by combating public deficits; 2) the European market has to fully integrate by setting up productive network industries (notably in energy) by applying the principle of mutual recognition for all relevant markets and by adopting a directive that is genuinely supportive of growth and job creation; 3) the EU must have effective governance and resolve institutional problems posed in the Union of 25 or more members; 4) protectionist tendencies should be combated and legislation firmly adhered to on the internal market by ensuring competitive conditions on the international markets as part of the on-going negotiations at the WTO; 5) enlargement opportunities have to be fully seized by removing current restrictions on workers from the new Member States having access to labour markets in the older Member States and by using regional and cohesion policy to encourage economic development in the whole of the EU, particularly in the new Member States; 6) the European social model must be modernised in order to be preserved by improving job opportunities for all and by adapting the social systems to the ageing population, as well as by creating the necessary space for social dialogue.
