Common position on EU participation in KEDO

Brussels, 28/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the General Affairs and External Relations Council on 20 March, the Council adopted a common position concerning the Union's participation in the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organisation, KEDO, in order to find a global solution to the problem of nuclear proliferation in Korea. The Council also adopted a decision approving the Commission's conclusion of an agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community, Euratom, and KEDO. The aim of the Council's common position is to allow the Union to take part in the process that is to put an end, as soon as possible, to the project of a light water reactor (LWR) and to put an ordered end to KEDO activities by the end of 2006. Via its stake in KEDO (since 1996), the Union has contributed to finding a solution to the problem of nuclear proliferation in the Korean Peninsula, in compliance with the objectives set out during the six-party talks (between China, North Korea, South Korea, the United States, Japan and Russia). The common position is to take effect from 1 January 2006 until KEDO activities close or until 31 December 2006, whichever comes first.
