28/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 21 March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) adopted a statement in which it “calls on the media to mount a constant vigil against discrimination, hate speech and stereotyping”. It stresses that freedom of expression “is not an absolute right and brings with it significant responsibilities” which the media have to exercise. Of particular concern to the Migration Committee is the stereotyping of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and it emphasises, “Images of 'waves' and 'tides' of migrants and asylum seekers all too often create alarm and panic within the public”. The Migration Committee also says that “Romanophobia” remains rampant, that anti-Semitism “continues to manifest itself” and Islamophobia “has grown”.
