28/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - In Rome on 22 March, the “little parliament” of the Liga Pesca discussed the proposals from European Commissioner Joe Borg on the “fisheries emergency”, recognising the vital importance of maintaining stocks but stressing too that the size of the fleet cannot be reduced without adequate social support. The Lega Pesca says that the precautionary principle cannot be applied to stocks and not to fishers' right to work. The organisation suggests that the 2007-2013 European Fund for fishing be doubled exclusively for port infrastructure, the promotion and development of new markets and conversion of fishing boats for innovative activities.
