Brussels, 27/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 23 March Leila Chadid, Palestinian Delegate General to the EU told MEPs that, “We are not asking Europeans to fight on our behalf” but to be consistent with themselves and, as they did at the outbreak of the war in Iraq, strive for multilateralism. Invited by the European parliamentary delegation for cooperation with the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), Chadid affirmed that Israel was preparing to “unilaterally decree the definitive borders” with its neighbours and that “with the dividing up of the territory left to the Palestinians and the annexations, there will be no room left for a Palestinian State”. Ms Chadid added, “we do not know how long one can watch the situation deteriorate and not do anything…there is the risk of losing credibility, in our case at the Palestinian Authority, and you, as financial donors, especially as a political partner, and the loss of confidence that will also affect the Quartet”. The Israel policy of “faits accompli” and European prevarication in the face of the winner of the Palestinian elections, Hamas, (Chadid reminded who Hamas was still on the European terrorist “black list”) made the risk of this movement getting more radical, even greater. She pointed out that the Hamas candidate was elected democratically but that the “Palestinian Authority does not exist in Israel's eyes and the way was therefore open to Hamas”. Ms Chadid asked “do you believe that by suspending financial aid things will move forward? Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL, Italy) President of the EP's Development Committee said “to the devil with the money, a political solution is needed”. Morgantini said that in such conditions it was unbearable to still talk about human rights at the European Parliament. She said that they should suspend all economic and diplomatic relations with Israel and deal with the PLC delegate, recalling that Hamas had been observing a truce for a long time. The MEP questioned the “wait and see” policy of the EU and asked why the EU had not believed Olmert when he announced his unilateral plan of “stealing Palestinian land?” She also noted that there was now a “physical and psychological separation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank” and whose inhabitants could no longer even go from one of these territories to the other. The President of the delegation, Adamou Adamos (GUE/NGL, Cyprus) said that they should send out an official invitation to the PLC and that he had already sent a letter to President Borrell warning against reducing EU aid to Palestinians.
