Brussels, 22/03/2006 (Agence Europe) -At its plenary session in Brussels, the Parliament is due to hold a debate on the situation in Belarus, on 23 March. This debate was not included on the agenda of the meeting, but several MEPs, meeting in plenary on Wednesday afternoon, said that it was absurd for the Parliament to wait for its next session (due to open in Strasbourg on 3 April) to discuss the serious events unfolding on the doorstep of the Union. We are "ridiculous and pointless" if we do not discuss the situation in Belarus, said Dutch Green Kathalijne Buitenweg. By Wednesday evening, a specific number of MEPs, as provided for by regulation, must have asked for such a debate to be held on Thursday morning.
