Brussels, 22/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - Concrete actions and priorities for reforming and modernising the European economy - this is the crux of the message sent out by EuroCommerce (the organisation represents international retailers and wholesalers) to Heads of State and governments on the eve of their summit on 23-24 March. In a press statement EuroCommerce underlined that “a better legislative environment for competitiveness, administrative simplification and legal certainty is essential to development”. It also stated that quality legislation required transparency and clarity. EuroCommerce is urging Member States to: 1) exploit the full potential of the internal market and the services sector and rapidly adopt the draft services directive. According to EuroCommerce, this text should “in no way be diluted than in the Parliament's compromise”; 2) re-examine their regulation on the labour market to obtain “more flexibility and mobility so as to integrate millions of unemployed”; 3) to do everything in their power to successfully conclude the Doha Round negotiations.
