THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/germany/enlargement

22/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEPs Hartmut Nassauer (CDU) and Markus Ferber (CSU) fully support Bavaria's Minister-President Edmund Stoiber's position on enlargement, expressed on Tuesday at a meeting with the European Commission and the first meeting of the Bavarian cabinet in Brussels (see EUROPE 9156). After meeting Mr Stoiber and Bavarian European Affairs Minister Emilia Mueller, Mr Nassauer said that “after the change in attitude from the German Social Democrats in the European Parliament” on EU enlargement, there was a developing “happy tendency towards realism” (see EUROPE 9153 and 9154). He said that the Socialist group “is moving towards the CDU/CSU line and in fact had taken up the idea of privileged partnership, which we developed” for countries which could not join the EU.
