17/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - Adopting two reports in Strasbourg on 16 March by Friedrich-Wilhelm Graefe zu Baringdorf (Greens/EFA, Germany), the European Parliament amended proposals on updating the legal protection of protected areas of origin (PAO), protected geographical indications (PGI) and guaranteed traditional specialities (GTS). The Council will be adopting the two regulations on 20 March, and is urged by the EP to move beyond simply making the necessary changes to abide by the April 2005 WTO ruling, but to consider broader issues without taking account of time. The EP amendments aim for publication on the web of a register of protected products; establishing different colour coding for each of the appellations and a clear difference in labelling from appellations of origin (to avoid misleading consumers when citizens of non-EU Member States win EU protection for products from their region).
