Brussels, 17/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 17 March, two days after 24 people who had been trying to reach the Canary Isles illegally were found dead, a spokesman told EUROPE that the European Commission was concerned about the situation in Mauritania, but that at the moment there were no plans for new measures. A member of the European Commission from DG Justice, Freedom and Security (JLS) travelled to Mauritania on Thursday with a Spanish delegation to assess the situation. Awaiting further information, the spokesman said that the European official's visit should not only allow it to be determined where the migratory movement originated and where it was destined for, but also let the concerns of the Mauritanian and Spanish governments be heard. The Commission is currently working, in line with European Council conclusions of December (see EUROPE 9091), to put in place close cooperation with North African countries to help them manage these migratory movements.
