Commission may warn Poland over its blocking of merger between HVB and UniCredit

Brussels, 03/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is considering writing to Poland over its behaviour in the planned acquisition of German bank HypoVereinsbank (HVB) by Italy's UniCredito, explained a Commission spokesperson on Friday. The College of Commissioners will decide on Wednesday whether the Polish authorities have violated Article 21 of the Merger Regulation, which gives the Commission exclusive power to decide on cross-border merger deals.
