Brussels, 02/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Parliament of Montenegro decided on 1 March to organise, on 21 May, the referendum on independence or maintenance of the union with Serbia. The “referendum law” voted on Wednesday by the Montenegrin deputies provides for voters to give a yes or no answer to the following question: Do you want Montenegro to be an independent State with total international and legal legitimacy? The government of Montenegro, which favours independence, and the opposition, which is favourable to union with Serbia, have finally accepted the recommendation of the European Union whereby independence could be valid if chosen by 55% of the voters with at least 50% voter turnout out of 466,000 registered (see EUROPE 9141 on declarations made in Brussels by Serbia-Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic). According to the latest poll results, those in favour of independence have 43% of voting intentions, compared to 31% for the unionists, with 24% still undecided.
