Brussels, 02/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will visit Ukraine on 2-3 March to meet President Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yekhanurov and Energy Minister Plachkov. She will also take part in the EU Troika ministerial meeting with Ukraine on 3rd March with Ukrainian foreign minister, Boris Tarasjuk. The main subjects on the agenda are progress in reforms in the country, implementation of the neighbourhood plan (including ongoing negotiations on the readmission and facilitation of procedures for granting visas), energy security, the situation in Belarus, Moldova and Russia, as well as international political questions. The general elections planned in the Ukraine on 26 March will also obviously be discussed. On Thursday the European Commission underlined in a press release that, “the democratic character of these elections is a fundamental element” in the EU's reflection on a possible future “strengthened agreement” with Ukraine, following the expiry of the of the current Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).
