Beijing expresses its displeasure

Brussels, 24/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Chinese Trade Minister expressed his displeasure on Friday, after the previous day's recommendation by Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson that Member States should impose compensatory anti-dumping duties on leather shoes imported from China (and Vietnam), duties which could go as high as 20% (see EUROPE 9138). In a press release from the Chinese Trade Ministry, China called on the EU to once again analyse and assess this dossier reasonably before coming to a decision that is in line with WTO rules. The press release went on to say that these duties violated the principle of fair trade. The Chinese shoe industry, it continued, did not practise dumping but was an intensive industry with low labour costs. The press release deplored the fact that, after long being treated unjustly by the quota system, the Chinese shoe industry was now confronted with manifestly protectionist measures from the EU.
